of Sport Fishing in Semakau Landfill
Semakau Island is Singapore's only landfill situated offshore
among the southern islands of Singapore. It covers a total area
of 350 hectares and has a capacity of 63 million m3. To create
the required landfill space, a 7km perimeter rock bund was built
to enclose a part of the sea off Pulau Semakau and Pulau Sakeng.
It is currently estimated that the landfill, which began operations
in 1999, will last till 2040.
After our
Minister Yaacob visited Semakau Landfill (SL) in 2004, suggested
that it should be opened up to the public for recreational purposes.
In tandem with the suggestion, a workgroup in NEA has been set
up to explore ways to promote Semakau Landfill for recreation.
This workgroup has been tasked to deal with how SL can be
opened up to the public for recreational purposes. It also aims
to delve into how SL can be promoted for recreation activities
among the puiblic and different interest groups.
SFAS was approached
by NEA Waste Management Department on 18th October 2004 to conduct
a feasibility study on the possibility to conduct sport fishing
on SL.
Several visits were made to the landfill escorted by NEA staff. |
