History of a Fishing Paradise - Lorong Halus by C.K. Chin

This place have been there for a long time. My sifu, Tay Nam Sang started fishing there with lures since 1973. The catch was also very good, whit Sea Bass (Barramundi) weighting from 3 to 10kg, and the unstoppable fish "Giant Herring" (AKA Lady fish, Ten pounder or Sea Lotus).
Sifu Tay Nam Sang brought me and my fishing buddy Y.T. Tan to fish there in 1984. The very first day, we hit the unstoppable fish. Every cast was a hit, three of us hooked but lost over 12 fishes. We even experienced "Fish spitting the lure back to us" for the first time. Back then we were using lure (Bait Caster).

Giant Herring are smart fish. They learnt fast after our second trip with Catch & Release. By the third trip, we just couldn't land another fish with lure. The fourth trip, when the lure hit the water, they just swam away. This was how we started fly fishing. From then onwards, we never turn back. We are unable to land all the biggie due to our skill, but most of them strip us bare off our 120m of backing.

There were about 5 ponds in Halus. We fish from one pond to another. Giant Herring is a seasonal fish. So when they are out of season we will fish for Tarpon.

Most of the actions happened in Pond 1 & 2.
